Enjoy Your Retirement. Call (207) SPINAL 1 (774-6251)

Is there hope for retirement if your health is failing? You’ve worked your entire life to enjoy your retirement. You have plenty of money and You are ready to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Only problem is, your back is not behaving. HEY! You wanted an active, pain free, “livin’ the dream”, retirement!   Years of stress on your body and nervous system have left you questioning whether or not you’ll be able to enjoy your hard earned time. You want to play with your grand kids, you want to travel, you want to spend time, quality time, with friends and family. If you can’t enjoy yourself comfortably and with less worry, what was all the hard work for in the end? Spinal hygiene is neglected in our society because we aren’t taught the importance of mobility of the spine and proper function of the nerves. IF we had been taught that, we’d understand that unlike with dental problems, there are no spine transplants, implants, or dentures. You get what you have earned, which is often an arthritic, stiff, dysfunctional spine with nerves that are compromised as a result. You don’t want to have surgery and you don’t...

A Leading Cause Of Colic In Maine.

October 29, 2018

Is your child having a hard time sleeping and pooping? Do they suffer from colic? Does your family suffer from their colic? Do you just want to help them feel better? Their nervous system may be the cause. Have you heard of sympathetic dominance?

Does your child have problems with eating, sleeping and difficulty pooping? Do They Suffer From Colic? In high school or college anatomy you may have heard of the “rest and digest” function of the nervous system. The rest and digest functions of your nervous system are controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system, and are just that, related to digestion and other slow moving, peaceful, low energy activities. You’ve probably also heard of the “fight or flight” response. This is the part of your nervous system that kicks in when you are under stress, and it focuses all of your energy on survival. When the fight or flight response kicks in, it often causes the rest and digest portion of your nervous system to go into the equivalent of sleep mode on your computer. Children of all ages, like adults, are under more physical, mental and chemical stress than any of us care to admit. Stress activates the fight or flight response, and in many of us, it is constant. What happens when you or your baby is in a constant state of fight or flight? You become stuck in what’s called “Sympathetic Dominance” which leads to an over production...

Why your Doctors don’t listen to you.

September 26, 2018

Health requires doctors who listen, patients who try, and recognizing that health does not come in a bottle.

Medical doctors can no longer put up with your bullshit. I have been seeing patients as a chiropractor for over 16 years. Most patients come to me because they want relief of symptoms so that they can get back to the things they love, or things they must do, like make a living to feed their family. What motivates you? People in my office also claim that they do not want medications, they don’t want surgery, and they want to do things naturally, or holistically. I believe most people tell the medical doctor exactly the same thing. Despite medical doctors having two primary tools to help you with, drugs and surgery, unless they are simply greedy members of the business of medicine, they really do want to help you be healthier. They will look at your labs, review tests, talk to you and usually listen at first. They will then tell you what you need to do to address the problem and will often also give you medications.  Your individualized instructions may be something like: “In the absence of lifestyle changes leading to regular exercise and a primarily vegetarian diet, Mr/Mrs. ________ will have this prescription for x,y and z, will...

Prevent Back And Neck Pain While Traveling! 3 Secrets!

September 21, 2018

A neck pillow for sleeping on the plan may save your vacation!

3 Tips For Back & Spine Care While Traveling By Plane. Nobody wants to spend time and lots of money on a vacation they can’t enjoy! There are tried and true methods and tools that you can utilize while traveling by airplane that will give you the best chance of a pain free trip. Rule 1: Don’t sit still for too long Movement is life. Get up and move around. Sitting and bumping around compresses the spine and the immobility allows for “locking in” of tension. Moving around, even stretching before boarding will warm you up for sitting for hours on end and may prevent typical travel pain. Stretch the neck and low back with simple stretches on the plane if it’s a long flight. For flights over 3 hours, this is especially important. Rule 2: Keep your stress level down. There’s no point in allowing yourself to become mentally stressed when there is virtually nothing you can do about flights being on time. There’s nothing you can do about the food they serve. There’s not much to be done about your neighbors on the plane. I once had a lady I did not know, who took up 2...

Identifying football injuries in Maine kids.

September 19, 2018

Football injuries are common. Some are painful, some are not. Both can cause real problems later in life if left untreated. Dr. Lou Jacobs, Maine Chiropractor, can be reached at (207) SPINAL 1

What Should Parents Be Most Concerned About Regarding Youth Football? It’s football season and we love it! Such a great game, such an exciting time of the year. The issue that should be most concerning to parents, is that football injuries are pretty common. While football injuries are not as abundant as they are in other sports, the types of injuries can be far more dangerous. Traumatic brain injuries like concussions and spinal compression and torsion injuries can lead to permanent disability or an increased risk of disability if left uncorrected or un-treated. Fractures need immediate orthopedic emergency intervention, but for all other lower grade injuries related to the nerves and joints of the spine, chiropractic is designed to help! Chiropractic focuses on the structural integrity of the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones and joints) and how abnormalities in structure within that system impacts the nerves and nerve compression. Nerve compression compromises healing, function and regulation of all body processes and can spell real trouble for youth football players later in life. Evaluations of football players is simple, comprehensive and painless. The information about their spine, nervous system and musculoskeletal system in general is information that can be considered for...

These Four Things Are All You Really Care About.

September 7, 2018

Dr. Lou Jacobs - Portland, Maine (207) SPINAL 1

Ask Yourself, Which Of These Four Things Makes The Top Of Your List? What would it take to get you to swim with sharks, run through a burning house, or ride a rocket to the moon? Have you ever thought deeply about what motivates us to do things? Usually, we ponder it in passing, but what drives us more than anything? Experts contend that there are four things that make us rise to most challenges. Health. Under appreciated when we have it, once lost, it becomes clear that it trumps money, hobbies, other people, vacations, etc. Without health nothing is possible. Preserving it through maintenance of your body and preventive action and healthy choices gives you the best odds of remaining healthy. When fighting for their lives, people undergo extreme pain and hardship to. regain their health. Their families suffer and their lifestyles often change dramatically. Their endurance is a testament to the extremes people will go to, to survive. Family. Love of family motivates people to work harder than normal, fight harder to survive, succeed and provide. People will fight gangs, swim with sharks, distract attacking bears, just to save their loved ones. Even at the expense of their...

The Kids Are Back In School! Time To Fix Your Back!

September 6, 2018

Suffering is often a choice. Choose corrective help today for a lifetime of better back health! Portland, Maine Chiropractor - (207) SPINAL 1

Back To School! Now You Have Time To Take Care of That Back! Lots of people put off now what they can deal with later. The summer in Maine is one of those times where we put off dealing with our own health issues to spend time with our kids and have fun enjoying the rapidly fleeting nice weather. Summer is our payday for suffering through winter and we deserve it. So, as much as I disagree with putting things off, I understand the wonderful distraction, but now the distraction is (mostly) over. The kids are back in school, schedules are far more regimented and predictable. The pain and dysfunction you’ve been tolerating all summer, can now be dealt with.   Back pain is usually a sign that there is something wrong with your back. “Usually”, you say? Yes, usually. Kidney problems, colon problems, reproductive organ problems and a host of others may also cause back pain. It’s important that you first differentiate and diagnose what is going on and what is not going on. This is the purpose of an initial examination at any type of healthcare office…differential diagnosis. Once the cause of your back problem is confirmed,...

July 31, 2018

Screw the meds. Correct the problem, live pain free. Call today for help (207) SPINAL-1 (774-6251) Portland, Maine

THE PAIN IS KILLING YOU! Pain is a sign of an underlying problem. Underlying problems are a sign of stress on your body that, in the presence of a symptom, has become bad enough that your body is breaking down. The pain is a warning sign. Much like the oil light in your car or a smoke alarm, if you don’t deal with the problem, your engine may blow up. Or your back may be irreparably damaged. Or your nerves may be seriously damaged. Or your hip may need surgery. Or your disc herniation may need an operation.   We are so lucky to have a system that alerts us of a problem. If you hear a smoke alarm in your house, you don’t shut your eyes and go back to sleep, do you? If you do, you’re crazy, right? Pain is a smoke alarm in your body. Before your “castle” burns down, get help finding the problem, solving the problem and eliminating the need for your body to feel pain in an effort to warn you of said problem. The job of chiropractic is to find the problem, correct it without drugs or surgery and change the focus...

9 Ways To Buy yourself time by staying healthy.

July 25, 2018

Investing in your health to buy yourself more time is money well spent. Dr. Lou and his team help you optimize health for more time and better quality time for years to com.

Healthcare is all about time. Time can be measured in quality and quantity. We all want more time and we all want it to be the best possible quality time too. For many, that means being active and doing what you love without pain, discomfort or limitations. When you boil it down, healthcare is all about buying you more time. Comfortable time or length of time…of your life. Life saving interventions and medications buy you both and emergency medicine is a great gift of science, study and technology. What many non medical professionals don’t realize is that most emergencies, didn’t have to be emergencies, they never had to happen. They are the result of lifestyle choices and management of our bodies that led to breakdown. You can buy quality of time and length of time by investing in healthy food, activities and preventive measures like chiropractic, before you have to do damage control with medical intervention. Why chiropractic? Because it’s geared toward prevention of decay of the spine and nervous system. Spinal decay and subluxation lead to pain and disability in 80% of Americans. Nerve compromise leads to great pain, dysfunction and disability too. Chiropractic prevents, manages and corrects...
