Allergy Relief in Portland, Maine | Allergies Dr. Lou Jacobs (207) 774-6152

March 21, 2012

Allergy Relief In Portland, Maine Allergy season blows.  If you have allergies, spring often brings more than flowers and rain. It brings flooding—of mucous from your nose and sinuses. Finding allergy relief in Portland, Maine is easier than you may think.  A scourge of headaches, chaffed nostrils, watery eyes, sneezing and bad sleep is no way to spend your spring. The good news is, there’s something you likely haven’t tried, and it has thousands of years of proven results. An article in Men’s Health magazine called acupuncture the non-drug solution to allergies. With good reason. Traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture have been used for centuries to acclimate the human body to seasonal changes. At the most basic level of Chinese medical theory, if our bodies are out of whack—out of balance—then we are more susceptible to “outside invaders.” We are less able to adapt to allergens. Our body, rather than letting it go, reacts with inflammation and copious amounts of snot.  Allergy relief in Portland, Maine is as easy as calling (207) 774-6251 At a deeper level, susceptibility to allergies, according to chinese medicine, often begins with a weakness in the lungs. The lungs in Chinese medicine produce what...

Buying A Mattress In Portland, Maine – Perspective Of A Chiropractor

March 13, 2012

Buying A Mattress In Portland, Maine Perspective of a Chiropractor As a chiropractor I am often asked my opinion of mattresses and which I think is best.  Below are a few simple tips for buying the mattress that is best for you. 1.  Firm is good.  If you sleep best on a firm mattress, you should buy a firm mattress. 2.  Soft is good.  If you sleep best on a soft mattress, you should buy a soft mattress. 3. Make sure that you can return the mattress within a month if you don’t like it. 4.  You get what you pay for. 5. You spend 1/3 of a 24 hour day in bed.  The purpose of a bed is to provide you with a comfortable surface to sleep on, resulting in waking in the morning, rested.  The best mattress for you is the one that will give you the best night’s sleep. I sleep on a Tempurpedic Mattress.  It is a medium-firm tempurpedic.  Every night, my wife and I thank God for this mattress.  It’s a sure thing.  If you have issues with your back that are preventing you from getting a good night’s sleep, call (207) 774-6251 for...

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Acupuncture – Portland, Maine

March 5, 2012

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Acupuncture Portland, Maine Carpal tunnel syndrome is a serious problem and is becoming more prevalent despite ergonomic measures to reduce Carpal Tunnel injuries.  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a repetitive stress injury that results in inflammation of the ligaments, tendons and soft tissue that lie inside the carpal tunnel, or the flexor retinaculum (transverse carpal ligament) that forms the carpal tunnel.  This inflammation compresses the median nerve and you may feel the following in the thumb, index and middle finger: * Pain * Numbness * Tingling * Weakness Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has been very effectively treated with acupuncture over the years.  Thin needles inserted painlessly in the wrists can reduce, even eliminate the pain associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  Acupuncture, combined with ice therapy, stretching and even physical therapy can reduce the symptoms or alleviate the problem completely.  Oftentimes acupuncture alone will do the trick. A patient of ours we’ll call Seth, works at a very busy restaurant.  He is cooking for hundreds of people and uses tongs on the grill most of the time.  He has occasional flare ups of all of the above symptoms.  He immediately seeks acupuncture treatment and the symptoms are eradicated...

Sciatica pain, Chiropractic Acupuncture – Portland, Maine

Sciatica Pain, Chiropractic Acupuncture Portland, Maine Sciatica pain is remarkably common.  Often characterized by pain down the back of the leg, numbness and even tingling, sciatica pain can be debilitating.  Impairing one’s ability to comfortably walk, stand or sit. There are two major causes of this type of pain.  In a “true” sciatica the nerves that go down the back of your leg are pinched or compressed in the lower part of the spine.  In what’s called “Piriformis Syndrome” the sciatic nerve is compressed by an inflamed muscle in your buttock.  Oftentimes without an MRI, piriformis syndrome is misdiagnosed as sciatica.  The primary difference, other than the cause, is the treatment. Although sciatica does respond to chiropractic manipulation and associated therapies, Sciatica is treated medically with steroid injections, surgeries and more invasive treatments.  Piriformis syndrome on the other hand, is easily treated with deep tissue trigger point therapy, chiropractic and/or acupuncture. Piriformis syndrome is often misdiagnosed as sciatica.  While piriformis syndrome does cause sciatica like pain, the treatment and outcome is often very different. For more information on treatment of sciatica pain in Portland, Maine, call (207)...
