CREATING A SAFER, MORE CERTAIN FUTURE FOR YOUR CHILD WITH ADD, ADHD, AUTISM OR SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDER. The number one concern among parents with child who has processing disorders, is their future. What will happen when they, the parents, are gone. Will the child be able to care for themselves? How much will need to have been saved for their care? Who will take care of them? How will they manage in their current state, but as an adult? It is these fears that drive parents to do everything they can to help their children reconnect, adapt and thrive, even if only a little bit. Sometimes the little bit is the difference between independence, relative independence or none at all. If you, the parent, can’t sleep at night because of worry for your child’s future, but you feel like you have tried everything, it may be time to look at the science from a different perspective.  CLICK HERE TO SLEEP BETTER AT NIGHT! I would like to think, based on conversations with parents, that even a 1-5% improvement in a child’s function would make the child’s life dramatically better, and the parent’s worry decrease a bit. It’s hard enough...

Healthier Teachers = Healthier Communities. Teachers Deserve More.

February 20, 2019

Teachers, Moms and Children are our top priority. (207) 774-6251

Teachers Deserve More.   While many say that a child’s greatest (or worst) education is at home, teachers mean the world to our families and our children. Despite fatigue, stress, wear, tear and premature aging, they relentlessly do their best to educate our children. It’s fair to say they do a great job, but when their health suffers, so does the community at large. My wife is a teacher. My father taught for over 40 years. My mother was a teacher. I was and am lucky enough to have teachers at home and at school. Not all kids are so lucky. The health of our children’s teachers directly impacts our homes and our communities. They deserve more. The four most important things in life are on the other side of this link. If you are a teacher, you are on vacation this week. Even though many of you are catching up on school work, it’s still a  rest from bending over, looking downward and hunching over students. Hopefully, you have a break from grading papers, the stress of children’s issues, a break from over concerned parents and juggling your own life at home with your life at school. Do you...

Does Back Pain During Pregnancy Lead To A C-Section?

January 16, 2019

Back pain during pregnancy may be a precursor to c-section.

Reduce your potential risk of an emergency c-section. Pain is your body’s way of alerting you of a problem. Some problems make labor and delivery even more difficult, which in turn leads to “fetal distress” at which point the doctor will order a c-section so that your baby is not “damaged.” Pelvis and low back pain, like all other warning signs, have causes. Some of these causes lead to dystocia, or difficult labor and delivery.  “Dystocia” or abnormal progress in labor is a common problem that is being looked at more closely as the incidence of C-Sections at some hospitals in the United States approaches 100%. Dystocia is also loosely defined as failure to progress during labor, lack of progressive cervical dilation or lack of fetal descent.  Before we look at the three most common causes of dystocia, lear about CPD and “abnormal progress”, both of which are common reasons that doctors give for the need for c-section. In many circles, CPD and “abnormal progress” are not legitimate reasons to have a c-section, ultimately it’s the parents’ call. Cephalopelvic distortion (CPD) is often blamed for dystocia and the need for a c-cection. CPD is a situation where the baby’s...

Up at 2 a.m. for your kids? Supermoms sometimes often at night.

January 7, 2019

We have experience helping parents sleep again...at no expense to your child. (207) 774-6251

2 a.m. mom’s know who they are. ARE YOU A “2 a.m. MOM?” A 2 a.m. mom is one who is up at 2 a.m. because of a child. If you are reading this, you are a great parent. You may be up worrying or you may be up because the child is up and needs you. Either way, at some point during the night, your stress is heightened and your worry soars. Your mind races, longs for answers, you want to sleep but your child is more important than rest. If nothing else is certain about Sensory processing disorders, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and the rest of the growing neurological disorders in children, one thing is for sure. They have strong and undeniable neurological components. The question is, what is the rest of the equation? What caused the nervous system to change? In an article published in the journal “Frontiers In Integrative Neuroscience,” in 2009, findings point to a host of potential contributors to Sensory Processing Disorders (SPD) and children with both ASD and SPD. Many studies have shown that there may multiple causes, making the hunt for a single cause, all that more elusive. Many of...

Help for your ADD or ADHD child.

December 26, 2018

Dr. Lou helps kids and families affected by ADHD and ADD. Call Perinatal & Pediatric Chiropractic of Maine at 207 553-7776 for help today.

Chiropractic may help your ADHD child. Have you been told that your child has ADD or ADHD? We help children with ADHD. Here’s how. There is growing medical evidence that chiropractic adjustments directly impact the parts of the brain related to mood, social interactions, attention, focus, self regulation, organization of thoughts, cause and effect, and a number of other functions and processes that are not considered normal in children with ADHD, even Autism Spectrum Disorders. Parents, here’s the science behind it. In 2016, in the journal Annals of Neuroscience, a study was published showing that the part of the nervous system that is disrupted in kids with ADHD is quantifiably dysfunctional. This is the autonomic nervous system. “The autonomic nervous system plays a vital role in attention, self regulation, emotional stability and social affiliation, which are affected in ADHD. The prefrontal cortex, which is vital for attention, motor control, emotional regulation and higher order autonomic control, is hypo (less) functional in ADHD.”  (Link to the research) Also in 2016, in the journal Neural Plasticity, research was published on the effect of chiropractic adjustments and the the effect on sensory motor integration in the prefrontal cortex. The results showed a direct...

Pigeon Toe Kids

November 21, 2018

"Pigeon toe" in your child is often caused by sacrum and pelvis misalignment. Have them examined by a pediatric chiropractor for sacroiliac joint subluxation!

Are you spending a fortune on orthotics for your pigeon toed child, without results? Is your kid “Pigeon Toed”? Have you spent a fortune on custom orthotics for their feet? Expensive shoes? Are you concerned about their sports performance? Their speed? How about the health of their feet, ankles and knees? Kids with toes pointing in and even knocked knees, may have a problem in the pelvis. Subluxation, or misalignment of the sacrum and pelvis will lead to hip rotation, knocked knees and pigeon toes. Specialists who focus on the feet, may neglect the sacrum and pelvis. Evidence has long shown there is a connection between the pelvis, spine, hips, knees and feet. If you have tried to help your child’s feet and despite expensive orthotics, no results….find a board certified pediatric chiropractor who is a specialist in the correction of sacro-iliac subluxation in kids. They can change the trajectory of your child’s future, while saving you a fortune on shoes, braces, inserts, and doctors appointments. Implications of pigeon toe… There are many potential issues if a child’s gate cycle and stance are affected by inward turned feet. Foot and ankle problems, abnormal shoe wear, knee problems, hip problems, even...

Your Kids Are On Vacation, Is your health on Vacation?

April 18, 2018

School Vacation doesn't mean a vacation from taking care of your health...or does it?

Life keeps coming, even during school vacation. The most important thing to your children, is your health. So often, even in the absence of travel, people take breaks from healthy activity because their kids are on vacation. Everyone understands that time is more of an issue if you are used to them being in school from 8-3, but is this an excuse of “average” or one that can be overridden with action, and by doing so, you become a 1% action taker with no chance of failure. Health is somewhat binary, you either do healthy things or you don’t. Yes, sometimes taking a week off is  acceptable if you have excellent momentum and are far too overwhelmed by your kids being home from school vacation. That said though, what is preventing you from taking your kids on a walk, taking them to your chiropractic visit, or taking them shopping for healthy food? Kids learn by watching us. If we “let things go” because we are on vacation, our kids will likely do the same. If we don’t make time for that which is most important, our health, our kids will learn that from us as well. It’s arguably MOST...

Explaining Chiropractic To Children.

March 21, 2018

How To Explain Chiropractic to kids. Lou Jacobs, DC, CACCP, Perinatal and Pediatric board certified chiropractor. Portland, Maine. (207) 774-6251

How should you explain chiropractic to children? Explaining chiropractic to children is much easier than you’d expect. You just have to know the right questions to ask and the right terminology to use. Don’t let your knowledge of what you think chiropractic is, get in the way of explaining it to your kids. Always tell the truth. You don’t need to tell your kids that the chiropractor is a doctor. Just call them the chiropractor. Kids associate needles, injections, bad tastes, medication, gagging on tongue depressors, cold stethoscopes, and a bunch of other things that medical doctors do, with “going to the doctor”. Chiropractors do none of these things. In fact, the chiropractic exam with a pediatric chiropractic specialist is often fun and feels good. Don’t talk to kids about scoliosis. The idea of “curves in the spine” may conjure up images of The Hunchback of Notre Dame or an otherwise scary looking person. 8 times out of ten, even parents don’t fully understand scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis and other spinal curves. ASK THIS: Do you know what controls your entire body? The brain controls your body. Can you wiggle your toes and take a deep breath? What controls that? That’s right,...

Dr. Lou’s List Of Top Choking Hazards For Babies. Eliminate them.

August 16, 2017

Dr. Lou Jacobs is a board certified perinatal and pediatric chiropractor in Portland, Maine. He has been working with moms and children for over 15 years. Reduce choking hazards.

Avoid disaster by removing access to these top choking hazards for babies. The last thing any parent wants to be faced with is a child who’s life is being threatened. Choking is one of the leading causes of unintentional death for infants. Every responsible parent should lower the risk of injury or death by removing hazardous items and feeding their children lower risk foods. Being prepared to help a choking infant by following the instructions as written by the National Safety Council:   Support the infant face down by holding the head in one hand with the torso on your forearm against your thigh Give up to five back slaps between the shoulder blades with the heel of your other hand If the object is not expelled, roll the infant face up, supporting the back of the infant’s head with your hand Place two fingers on the breastbone just below the nipple line Give five chest thrusts about one per second about 1 ½ inches deep Continue cycles of five back slaps and five chest thrusts until the object is expelled or the infant becomes unresponsive If the infant becomes unresponsive or is found unresponsive, begin CPR The items...
