Evidence Based Guidelines For Chiropractic Care.

May 9, 2018

Evidence Based Chiropractic Care in a small office with a big heart. Dr. Lou Jacobs - Over 16 years experience in the U.S. and Europe. Located in Portland, Maine. (207) 774-SPINAL 1

There is an enormous body of evidence that substantiates YOUR chiropractic care. If you are the type of person who wants medical research to back up your care in any type of office, you’ll be happy to know that Evidence Based Guidelines for treatment frequency and duration of chiropractic care exist and are used in many offices. When searching for a chiropractor, you should understand the degree to which they follow the chiropractic clinical guidelines. These guidelines lead to the best understanding and the best acute care. These offices also tend to have fewer issues with insurance companies, thereby making your life easier. What does the evidence show? If you have had pain for more than 8 days, waiting to see if it would improve, your recovery time may be 1.5 times longer than if you begin care within the first 8 days of symptoms. If you are in severe pain, the recovery time may be 2 times longer than if your pain is mild. If you have had greater than 3 episodes of the same symptoms in the past, the recovery time may take up to two times longer than if you have had fewer than 3 previous...

Concussions In Sports.

May 5, 2018

Concussions. Dr. Lou Jacobs - Portland, Maine. Board Certified in Pediatric Chiropractic. (207) 774-6251

Concussions Lead To Brain Damage. Did you know that kids take longer to heal from concussions than adults? The matrix of support structures that stabilizes the brain are less developed in kids than in adults. The brains of our children slosh around more than adult brains. Unlike most issues where kids heal faster, concussions are the exception and parents should understand this. If your child has been concussed, you must have a healthcare provider monitor and manage their progress. At many levels of play, professionals and kids alike, research shows that pre-season training and tryouts are often the times where the risk of concussions is even higher than during the regular season. Contrary to common parental belief, helmets don’t prevent concussions. Impact is not necessary for concussion. Many concussions occur from quick movements. The brain sloshes around inside the skull and injuries occur.   Contrary to common belief, believe it or not, mouth guards do not prevent concussions. Mouthguards prevent the need to pick teeth up off the turf, but do not prevent concussions. In adults, women are more susceptible to concussions than men, with the exception of lacrosse players. Male lacrosse players are at higher risk of concussions...

Searching For A Healthcare Community?

March 19, 2018

Hop on board Dr. Lou's chiropractic community! Tired of institutionalized, factory-like healthcare where you are more of a number than a person? Join us for healthcare redefined in Maine. (207) SPINAL 1 (774-6251)

Not Into Modern Day American Factory (assembly line) Healthcare? Maybe it’s time to join a healthcare community. Amazon is great for buying electronics and kitchen equipment, but is that kind of shopping what you want when looking for a doctor? A healthcare community is an office that takes a drastically different approach to your healthcare. It is an environment that people choose to get the care that they need but with the feeling of having it delivered to them at home, by friends, even family who care more about them and their lives than they do about the business of healthcare.     The following paragraph was copied from LinkedIn: Entrepreneurs should think small, says Nassim Taleb. The scholar and author argues that as companies grow, entrepreneurs lose touch with the people they aim to serve. “The minute you’re dealing with faceless people, you have different ethical rules prevailing, and effectively most people lose their humanity,” he told LinkedIn’s Dan Roth. So often we hear from patients that they are looking for something different but they haven’t known where to find it. They don’t want to feel taken advantage of, they want to feel like a person, not a...

A “Small Chiropractic Office”. Is it for you?

February 14, 2018

A Small Chiropractic Office Has Special Qualities That May Fit Your Needs! It will feel like coming home to an office that listens, cares, finds the problem and fixes it. Never feel like a number or like you are on an assembly line again!

Why a small chiropractic office may be best for you. If you have had experiences in medical facilities that made you feel like a “rushed number”, you may want to find yourself a small chiropractic office. Small offices often provide you with a level of care that feels different than a large multi doctor business. A small chiropractic office offers a lot of one on one time, if that’s what you want. So often, patients in larger “factory like” offices feel as though they are not given enough time with the provider. The attitude of small offices is different, it’s not as stressed, it’s dedicated to you and your time to be heard. A small office also emphasize much of what other types of offices lack, listening and concern for the individual. Because they aren’t focused on fulfilling quotas or paying for expensive overhead, they have less to worry about so they can worry about you. Small offices often have consistent staff, less turnover, and that means more consistency for you. It’s nice to know that when you walk into your providers office, you’ll see a familiar face who knows you and some of your story. Just because it’s...

The Dirty Dozen! Dr. Lou Jacobs - Board Certified Pregnancy and Pediatric Chiropractor. Portland, Maine. (207) 774-6251

The Dirty Dozen is a list of fruits and vegetables that you MUST buy organic. Most non-organic vegetables are saturated in pesticides. Large non-organic farms use pesticides to protect crops but these pesticides harm humans (you and me). Some fruits and vegetables are more absorbent of pesticides and are more covered in pesticides than others. The produce that should always be purchased and consumed “organic” are on a list called “The Dirty Dozen”. Strawberries Spinach Nectarines Apples Peaches Pears Cherries Grapes Celery Tomatoes Sweet Bell Peppers Potatoes If you are only able to buy some foods from the organic section, make sure that they are those on this...

The End Of Dr. Lou’s Weight Loss Challenge! A Weight Loss Revolution!

December 5, 2017

Change Your Life, Call Dr. Lou today! (207) 774-6251

Dr. Lou’s Weight Loss Challenge Has Died From Complications Of Obesity. A personal message from Dr. Lou. That’s Right, but there’s great news. The three month challenge that has led to hundreds of people losing thousands of pounds is taking a break this year. Over the years we’ve given away thousands of dollars and helped dozens of people take off tremendous weight and keep it off. As otherwise motivated participants became less engaged in the process (Free Classes, Workshops, etc) and subsequently were less successful in the program, I started strategizing better, more effective ways of helping people get in shape. I wanted to continue to use the valuable information and tools we’ve used in the challenge. This has led me back to the most successful plan of action I know. For over 15 years I have been privately coaching people to better fitness and weight loss. One on One attention appears to be what works best for my clients and it allows them to comfortably work through weight loss without the involvement of distracting group meetings and generalized plans. Our program was overweight with options and I’ve decided to slim things down. I will be reinvesting my time...

3 Steps To Greater Compassion For Oneself.

November 28, 2017

Compassion, Caring, Better Health. By you, for you. (207) 774-6251

We often lack compassion when it comes to ourselves. 3 solutions to a happier, more compassionate life with oneself. We’re too fat, too ugly, too poor, too disconnected, too lazy, too unlucky. You’ve seen the meme, “Everyone you meet is going through something you know nothing about. Be kind.” How do you apply that compassion to yourself? How do you become #1 in your life? One of the easiest ways to develop a mindset of compassion for oneself is to stop considering the thoughts of others. What? That sounds awfully self centered and socially irresponsible, Dr. Lou! We care too much about what others think. Ask yourself this question: If you lived in the forest or an abandoned city with nobody to judge you, your clothes, your actions or your beliefs, would you be as hard on yourself? Are your biggest issues with yourself based on the thoughts of those around you? If you had nobody to compare yourself to physically or mentally, would you care how you look or what you know? Of course not. So why do the views and thoughts of people you don’t know matter right now? If you don’t know or interact with them isn’t that similar...

The Event That Changes Everything. It’s a little frightening to know that without an absolute knowledge of your body, at any given moment, you could have “the event that changes everything.” Now, to be fair, most of us will not experience this type of life altering subluxation or other meltdown. Lawn care and maintenance in the summer can be one of those activities that sticks it to you. Why lawn care? Because lawn care involves the “3 T’s”. The three T’s are thoughts, traumas and toxins. Thoughts: The mental stress that accompanies doing something you dread doing (Yard work) Traumas: The physical labor and stress of holding equipment, mowing, blowing, weeding, hedging, etc. Toxins: Gasoline fumes, stress hormones, inflammation chemicals and the like. Heavy, cumbersome equipment, the fact that you’d rather be hanging out with friends and family and the uptick in stress hormones all make you more vulnerable to a physical melt down. Sciatica, disc herniations, sprain strains, frozen shoulders and the like can be the result of overstressed yard work. Hold your leaf blower close to your body and use both hands to hold it. Don’t ever hold anything cumbersome and heavy, far away from your body....

Painful Joints and body pain in cold, wet, weather.

June 7, 2017

Pain in the rain? Do your joints hurt when it's wet and cold outside? Your body ache in the rain and cold? This is a sign of a problem. Call Dr. Lou at (207) 774-6251 and schedule relief today!

It’s “common” but not “normal”. Why does weather affect our joints and bodies? We have baroreceptors, like barometers, in our hearts, in our joints and throughout our bodies. These baroreceptors communicate to the body what’s happening in our environment and the brain creates a response. Damaged receptors don’t work well. If these receptors are in your knees or hips for example, the body’s response may be skewed, or may be appropriate but the joint is still dysfunctional. Either way, pain often increases. Let’s say that you have an injured knee that’s already misaligned and inflamed. When the weather is cold and damp the lubricating synovial fluid of the joint reduces in quantity. With less fluid in the joint,  the misalignment and inflammation become more pronounced and the weather tips the pain “over the edge”.  If your knee were not misaligned and inflamed already, this weather change wouldn’t bother your knee. If your hip joints are filled with inflammatory tenodonitis and the weather is damp and cold, these changes in environmental barometric pressure lead to an increase in inflammation in the ligaments and tendons, leading to more pain. It pushes your hips “over the top”. If your hip were in perfect...

Shoulder Injuries: Healing, Prevention, Optimization.

May 31, 2017

Shoulder pain is cruel and unusual punishment for not taking care of your shoulders. Do the right thing. Prevention is the best medicine. Both chiropractic and acupuncture may help. Call Dr. Lou in Portland at 774-6251.

The Shoulder Injuries, Healing, Prevention and Optimization. Like with any problem with the body, it’s best to try and avoid it. Regular strength training and range of motion exercises for the shoulders will prevent problems. The shoulders are complicated joints, not because of the joint itself but because of the support system of muscles, ligaments and tendons. Most of the stability of the shoulder comes from the muscles and ligaments of the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff consists of 4 muscles. These muscles are Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor and Subscapularis. The joints that comprise the shoulder are the ball and socket joint called the glenohumoral joint.  The “AC Joint” or acromioclavicular joint is where the collar bone meets the shoulder. Maintaining mobility, keeping inflammation down and strengthening the muscles of the shoulder “complex” will reduce the likelihood of a shoulder injury. Common shoulder pain stems from bursitis, impingement, shoulder dislocation, ac joint separation and the dreaded “frozen shoulder”. Shoulder injuries often result from repetitive stress like pitching a baseball or adjusting chiropractic patients by hand.  Traumatic injuries would be accidents like a fall down the steps or running into another football player. Rehabilitation of the shoulder with physical therapy, chiropractic...
