Dr. Lou’s Promise to Pregnant Moms in Maine

Our purpose is to help you feel better through the correction of the underlying structural issues that are causing your pain, immobility, discomfort or risk for dystocia (difficult or prolonged labor). We will create a gentle, safe, efficient plan of action to get you in the best position possible for the rest of your pregnancy, including labor and delivery.  We will work and communicate with your other providers to help you accomplish exactly what you want by being in our Portland office.

As many as 80% of women have back pain during pregnancy, and in the U.S. today, on average, pregnant women take three to five different medications.

You have been hearing your whole life that during pregnancy, more than any other time in your life, it is best to not take medications. Medications often pass through to the developing baby and may cause harm to your child.

An understanding of your body during pregnancy makes it clear that it will change. A Lot. Structurally your body adapts to carry your child as it develops. Chemically, your body changes to support both of you, nourishing and creating hormones and chemicals that facilitate growth, development, and preparation for labor and delivery. Your brain and nerves communicate through, and out from the spine, to orchestrate and perfectly execute the functions needed to carry your baby healthfully to term. Abnormalities in structure, chemistry, and neurology often lead to pain and dysfunction that alert you of the problem. These types of issues are the domain of the board-certified specialist in chiropractic care during pregnancy.

These symptoms of pain, dysfunction, discomfort, insomnia, headache, and fatigue, among others, may be signs of issues that affect your comfort and function as well as the baby’s development and preparation for birth. Poor pelvic or position of the sacrum, weak nerve communication to the uterus and the muscles that push the baby out, and abnormalities of a position of the uterus may lead to “Dystocia.”

Dystocia is abnormal progress in labor, difficult or prolonged. It is thought of as a major contributor to the increase in C-Sections in the U.S., and it is directly related to the causes of the symptoms often felt by moms during pregnancy.

  4. You are doing everything you can to give your child the healthiest start, even before they are born, from organic food for you to suffer through pain without drugs.
  5. You want to have the best shot at a “natural birth.”

The Webster Technique

Our mission is to help prepare you for the type of labor and delivery that you want.

While under chiropractic care during pregnancy, your board-certified perinatal chiropractor will work to correct structural and neurological misalignments and communication issues called subluxations that may impact the ease of labor and delivery. While there is no alternate universe to compare your care to non-care results, moms who have birthed more than one child very often remark that their chiropractic pregnancy, labor, and delivery were easier than those without chiropractic care.

Breech presentation nearly always leads to the suggestion of ECV or External Cephalic Version technique at 37 weeks. This technique attempts to force a breech baby into the birthing position while being monitored at a hospital with a NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). The technique is painful and risky, which is why it is only done in a hospital environment. There is an alternative to ECV if you call the board-certified perinatal chiropractor in time. It’s called “The Webster Technique.” (Source: International Chiropractic Pediatric Association ICPA)

Why Does Board Certification Matter for Maine Chiropractors?

SAFETY, EFFICACY, UNDERSTANDING.

You wouldn’t likely go to a general practitioner to deliver your child instead of an obstetrician or midwife, and you wouldn’t likely go to a general practice chiropractor if you knew that there existed a specialty that involves pregnancy and pediatric chiropractic. Board-certified perinatal chiropractic specialists are more familiar with moms, their bodies, how they change, move and adapt to pregnancy. They are trained in techniques to most effectively and safely help moms through pregnancy, as well as pre and post labor and delivery. They are also trained in what is not safe to do during pregnancy.

Board certification in perinatal and pediatric chiropractic means that your chiropractor has studied and been tested to meet the high standards for safely and effectively understanding and working with pregnant moms and children.
