What is a Primary Chiropractic Provider?   A primary chiropractic provider (PCP) is the doctor of chiropractic that you have chosen to create a longstanding relationship with. This is the chiropractor is the one who you see regularly or one that you have waiting on the sideline for when you need them the most.   Does a primary chiropractic provider do anything other than chiropractic? Primary Chiropractic Providers are not medical doctor PCP’s. They only perform services that are within their scope of practice as a chiropractor and are not to be confused with a primary care physician.    How do you find a PCP? You interview them. If you like them, make sure that you state your expectations from the beginning. Tell them what you want and what you hope to achieve. Explain your goals, your history and your expectations not only regarding care, but also of the chiropractor. This type of up front communication leads to the chiropractor being able to create a salubrious plan for you that will fit your lifestyle and goals.   In our office we have people of all types. Some come only for pain relief, others come regardless of how they feel....

The Salubrious Dr. Lou   In the wake of Johns Hopkins University reporting a study they did on the risk of medical care, people are reevaluating how they prevent illness and injury. They are even going one step further to consider how they should promote health. In the U.S., the third leading cause of death is medical errors. Keep in mind, the 250,000 people a year reported in this study do not include people who would have died because of their condition. These are blatant medical errors. That’s 700 medical error deaths a day or 9.5% of U.S. deaths annually. Operations, prescription drugs, communication errors and a few other big ones are to blame.   Medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating disease. Chiropractic focuses on the creation of health. How does chiropractic do this? It does it through optimization of the regulation of your body and making you ready for what life throws at you! Proper brain and nerve control is essential for optimal body function. Whether it is your immune system, digestion, blood pressure or any other bodily function, your brain is the master controller. Your brain controls things through the nerves that come out of the spine. Spinal...

Why does chiropractic work so well?

Why Does Chiropractic Work So Well? When you think of alternative medicine, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Homeopathy and Naturopathy probably come to mind first. What makes these specialties alternative to allopathic medicine? What makes chiropractic “alternative” and why does it work so well? Chiropractic is less of an alternative, implying it is good in the place of something else, and more of something completely different! Chiropractors are the only professionals in the world trained specifically to identify and correct vertebral subluxation. Vertebral subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that puts pressure on nerves. There are over 120 joints in the spine and 31 pairs of spinal nerves! When nerves are compressed, they don’t work properly. When they don’t work properly, your body doesn’t work properly. Chiropractic is based on the power of the brain to heal, regulate and control the body. Chiropractors understand that without clean nerve signals, the body’s inborn capacity to heal and regulate itself is diminished. Diminished healing and control lead to faster breakdown and chronic problems. The brain controls everything from your big toe to large intestines to your liver enzyme production. In fact, your brain is sending and receiving millions of signals every second. Have...

“Onde estava O Dr. Max?” “Where’s Dr. Max Been?” In Portland, Maine From Portugal   Did you know Dr. Lou has a brother who is also a Chiropractor? Did you know he used to work at Jacobs Chiropractic Acupuncture?   Did you know he’ll be back at Jacobs Chiropractic Acupuncture in Portland, Maine from Portugal for May and June while Dr. Lou is in Romania?   For the past three years Dr. Max has been in Portugal, practicing “Quiroprática”.   That’s how the Portuguese would say Chiropractic, if they had ever heard of it, which most of them haven’t.   Being a Chiropractor in Portugal is a little different than in Portland, Maine. Besides learning some portuguese, you have to go with the flow of Portuguese life, which means working late (people expect an adjustment at 9pm!), getting up early and drinking several espressos “um café” throughout the day.   All that caffeine probably makes the other drivers on the road worse that the Italians, who are pretty well known as being bad drivers. On my way into Lisbon, I almost always see an accident. The good news is, the Portuguese are very friendly and forgiving.   What do people...

Doula Tea is the name of an organized meeting in Portland, Maine. Doula Tea is not just for Doulas! It is designed to bring together perinatal healthcare providers and experts, parents and parents to be, and anyone else interested in in perinatal issues and the development of community in Portland and surrounding areas. Every month there is a guest speaker. In February of 2016 our speaker was Dr. Mike Dowling of Falmouth Pediatric Dentistry. He discussed issues with “tongue tie”.   The March 2016 a last minute speaker change was made and the speaker will be Dr. Lou Jacobs, Chiropractor. Doula Tea with Dr. Lou Jacobs will be about “The Webster Technique”. The Webster Technique is a chiropractic method of evaluation and adjustment that was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). The Webster Technique is known worldwide for helping to facilitate the natural movement of a breech baby into a proper birthing position. “Dr. Lou” is certified by the ICPA in The Webster...
