Doula Tea is the name of an organized meeting in Portland, Maine. Doula Tea is not just for Doulas! It is designed to bring together perinatal healthcare providers and experts, parents and parents to be, and anyone else interested in in perinatal issues and the development of community in Portland and surrounding areas. Doula Tea is held every month, usually on the third Sunday unless it is conflicting with a holiday. Meetings last for an hour and a half, refreshments are served. Every month there is a guest speaker. In February of 2016 our speaker was Dr. Mike Dowling of Falmouth Pediatric Dentistry. He discussed issues with “tongue tie”.   The March 2016 a last minute speaker change was made and the speaker will be Dr. Lou Jacobs, Chiropractor. Doula Tea with Dr. Lou Jacobs will be about “The Webster Technique”. The Webster Technique is a chiropractic method of evaluation and adjustment that was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). The Webster Technique is known worldwide for helping to facilitate the natural movement of a breech baby into a proper birthing position. “Dr. Lou” is certified by the ICPA in The Webster...

Get The Most Out Of CrossFit.   You are loving CrossFit but not loving your results. Yeah, you are moving forward, but not as fast as the others. Not fast enough to meet your goals.   If results are less than inspiring, you need to ask yourself a few questions.   * What controls strength output?   * What controls your reflexes?   * What controls your focus and response to stimuli?   * What controls motivation and action?   * What processes your movement, your lifting, pushing, pulling, jumping?   If you said “my brain” you are correct. It controls everything and needs to send messages to your body and receive messages from your body quickly and perfectly to get perfect results. Any type of physical exercise that requires mental focus and motivation combined with feats of strength and coordination require fast, accurate nerve communication. Nerves become compressed by inflammation in the muscles, joints and other structures. The nerves to your arms and legs exit from the spine. In fact the nerves going to most of the body exit from the spine. Misalignment, inflammation and compression of nerves where they exit the spine, interferes with optimal communication and impedes...

Pain In The Back Of The Neck (and head).   I have pain in the back of the neck that goes into my head. What does this mean? Pain in the back of the neck is a common problem. It can be caused by trauma, like a fall or car accident. It can also be caused by bad posture, which is also a type of physical trauma.   Pain in the back of the neck can be caused by mental or emotional stress. Stress, anxiety, fear and anger often lead to physical tension, inflammation and spasm of muscle. These physical changes from mental stress often lead to pain which causes more tension and stress, leading to more tension and stress. It’s a horrible vicious cycle, which when present for months or years, can become a serious chronic problem.   When this pain in the back of the neck leads to pain and tension into the head, you are beginning to experience tension headaches. Tension headaches can be very painful and often present in the forehead, back of head and behind the eyes. They are sometimes even the trigger for migraine headaches. Migraine headaches are often disabling.   Tension headaches...

Chiropractic Treatment Of Sciatica – No Drugs. No Surgery.

Chiropractic Treatment Of Sciatica Sciatica Help Without Surgery   Chiropractic treatment of sciatica has long been a go to method of gaining relief of the dreaded low back and leg pain.   Sciatica is caused by irritation by the spine of the nerves that form the sciatic nerve. Inflammation compression, direct bony compression, disc herniation and other causes must be identified precisely in order to apply the proper treatment by any doctor. Chiropractors are no exception. Watch Christopher’s story about sciatica.   If and only if, it appears safe to treat the causative misalignment, disc bulge or inflammation, the back pain chiropractor will “adjust” the spine into optimal position to remove interference in the nerves thereby restoring function and decreasing pain to the sciatic nerve. Sometimes the cause of the sciatica requires surgery. If this is the case, your chiropractors in Portland, Maine will be able to tell you this.   **Some cases of sciatica are not sciatica at all but rather what’s called “piriformis syndrome”. Performs syndrome is an inflammation and tension in the piriformis muscle that leads to sciatic nerve compression in the muscles of the butt. It feels like sciatica, it acts like sciatica, but ultimately it is much...

Resolution of Hip Pain With An Understanding of Anatomy and Physiology Resolution of hip pain is very dependent on a level of competence in anatomy and physiology. Sounds simple but the sacro-iliac joint is often mistaken for the hip, leading to all kinds of confusion and poor results.   What does a Portland chiropractor do for your hip pain? The first thing a chiropractor for hip pain does is identify if it is hip pain or sacro-iliac joint (SIJ) pain.  (follow the link to a video!)   If the pain is actual hip pain, the chiropractor will evaluate the patient to determine which adjustment will help the hip problem resolve with the greatest ease. If no adjustment will help, the chiropractor will likely send the patient to another doctor or physical therapist who may be able to help. Ellie had hip pain before a half marathon, watch her testimonial!   Acupuncture is also extremely effective for reducing pain in the hip joint.   If the pain is coming from the Sacro-iliac joint, the chiropractor will evaluate the joint for subluxation, or misalignment that causes interference to the nerve leading to dysfunction and even pain. If subluxation is identified, gentle adjustments to...
