Every professional, whether they are a cardiologist, a chiropractor, a lawyer or a mechanic, has learned things that they wish others outside of the profession knew. The information is important, often life altering or has the potential to help you avoid significant suffering.

I’ve had a lot of time lately to reflect on what chiropractors would want you to know. Here is a list of a few of the most important things that most people don’t know but should. According to the chiropractor.

The first and most important thing is that your body is a self healing, self regulating organism. This healing and regulation is the responsibility of the brain. The brain is so important that it’s encased in solid bone to protect it’s ability to perform it’s duties. It is also the master processor of your world, the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) is the system in your body by which you experience life. Pressure on nerves (“Subluxation”) interrupts communication and hurts your health and adaptability. Chiropractors remove interference caused by spinal subluxation and function improves within your master control system. That’s a good idea whether you hurt or not. There’s nothing good about functioning at 85% when it could be 100%.

2. Just because you don’t hurt, doesn’t mean you don’t have a problem. The first sign of heart disease for many is a heart attack. Cavities in your teeth don’t start the day they start hurting, they were decaying long before. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, even many cancers don’t hurt. You may not feel nerve dysfunction. Only 10% of nerve fibers feel pain, the rest are in control of functions. What do you think would happen if the nerves to your kidneys were compromised because of pressure from a misaligned bone in your back?

3. After an accident, even a slow collision, you should seek an evaluation of your spine and neck as soon as possible. Pain often doesn’t start until days, even weeks after an accident. Dysfunction though, it starts immediately. Inflammation, degeneration, misalignment, among other issues all start after impact. Again, even if you don’t hurt, doesn’t mean dysfunction caused on the day of the accident won’t come back to haunt you later in life.

4. Keep your weight down “within normal limits” and the nerves and joints of the spine will be under less physical and chemical stress.

5. Stay strong, stay fit, stay toned. Chiropractors understand the importance of a strong healthy structure. The better shape you are in, the greater the likelihood you will run into fewer problems.

6. Your mental health impacts your physical and chemical wellbeing. Mental stress increases inflammation and tension in your body. Mental stress causes chemical and hormonal changes that are harmful over the long and short term. Chiropractors can help reduce your mental stress.

7. You are today, the sum of all of your choices, injuries and stress from your entire life. If you ever wonder what the heck happened to you, take a stroll down memory lane.

8. Your sleep position is much more important than you think. Sleeping on your stomach is BAD. Not only is it harmful to your spine and nerves, it also makes your face wrinkles worse.

Do you sleep on your stomach and need help getting to your back?
