The dream car that I no longer want is a Jaguar Growler for $700,000
Jaguar Growler & My Change of Heart I was recently watching the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type on Top Gear, my favorite car show of late. I love cars. I have a hard time keeping one for more than a couple years because I like to try new things. The hard top E-Type Jag is my favorite car of all time. It is by far and away my favorite looking car, so when I saw the new “Growler” I almost lost my mind. The Growler is the NEW version of the E-Type. They did an incredible job of making it even better looking than the original. Unfortunately, they let the price get out of control at $700,000. Yes you read that right. So I’m sitting on the couch late at night reading about the car online and I ask myself a question and come to a realization. What machine could possibly be worth $700,000 and why/how could I possibly pursue something like that when I have my body for “free”. It’s not the dollar amount that’s scary, I believe any of us can have anything if we put our mind to it. Even in terrible shape though, our...

Jewish Doctors and Christmas – Portland, Maine Nothing is worse than waking up on Christmas morning with your kids reeling to open presents, excitement is high and you can’t move. You are only 40 years old and you feel like you’re 95. Here’s the bad news. Christmas is going to be a bit less wild this year. No climbing the Christmas tree or body surfing in the snow bank after your egg nog party. You may be best off moving slowly, doing some Christmas yoga and indulging in a LITTLE liquid muscle relaxant. You won’t be able to test drive your kids new skates or skis with them, but you’ll be able to use (from the sideline) the new telephoto lens you got from your lovey. The good news is that there are Jewish doctors who are happy to be at work or on call for Christmas. The Chinese food and movie tradition, as glamorous as it sounds, pales in comparison to helping those in need. The good thing about seeing a doctor who isn’t worried about missing the holiday with their family is that they’ll be focused on you. Research has probably shown that doctors who are distracted...

Flu Shot Maine It is a horrible tragedy when a child dies of a generally non life threatening illness. This happened this past week in Maine when a child died from complications of the flu. As the father of a 3 year old, my heart goes out to the family and friends of this child. This unfortunate death happened at a time when I was already writing a blog post on the flu shot. The media has a way of blowing things up, sometimes right, sometimes wrong. I am concerned about how the news is reporting this tragedy. “After the death of an otherwise healthy child from the flu, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is urging those who haven’t yet received flu shots to get them” (bold added by me). Ask yourself the following. Does it make sense that “otherwise healthy” children die of the flu given that millions get the flu each year? The use of “otherwise healthy” appears incredibly misleading. Healthy people don’t get sick and they don’t die from illnesses that don’t generally kill people. Do healthy people get cancer and die? Do they have heart attacks that come out of nowhere...

2013 Resolutions in Portland, Maine A recent article in Muscle & Fitness Magazine revealed the following statistics: 15% of Americans belong to a gym. 67% of that 15% NEVER use the membership. 10% of resolutions are to exercise more. 19% of all resolutions are to lose weight. 67% of Americans make 3 resolutions every year. 8o% of people who join a gym in January Quit by February. My experience with weight loss challenge participants and weight loss coaching clients has been the following: People set the right goals for the wrong reasons. People lose steam because they haven’t been honest regarding their motivation(s). People have their plan “in their head” instead of on paper and it gets lost in the day to day this and that. People who write down their goals and keep them prominent (reviewing them daily) win. People think they understand nutrition and food and when their self made customized diet doesn’t work, they are surprised, and blame the process not themselves. Education on diet and nutrition, even if you already know a lot, never hurt anyone. Having a support group, attending classes, using a trainer and/or a coach does not mean...
