Childhood Stress Can Permanently Affect Your DNA. A recent study done at Tulane University School of Medicine has shown that mental stress during childhood leads to permanent change to telomeres. Telomeres are the part of your DNA responsible for protecting chromosomes from sticking together and being damaged leading to early cell death. The work has been published in the journal Pediatrics. Damaged or shortened telomeres have been associated with higher risks for heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline and mental illness, among others.   How do people process stress?   The answer is: Your brain.   How does your brain communicate with the rest of your body down to a cellular, even genetic level?   The answer is: Your nerve system.   Does a poorly communicating nervous system deal with childhood stress properly?   Answer: NO.   Do Subluxations of the spine impact the nerve system in a negative way that compromises communication?   Answer: YES, by definition, subluxations or misalignments of the spine that cause nerve communication breakdown from the brain to the body. This negatively impacts the way the brain interprets the environment and how it then controls, regulates and heals your body.   Does chiropractic improve brain-nerve-body-cell...

What is Pain?

What is Pain?   Pain is a warning sign.  A Sign that something is wrong.  Pain is a sign that a problem has a clear and present potential to get worse.  Pain is a healthy response to an unhealthy issue.  Without pain, we would certainly not live as long as we do.  It prevents us from damaging ourselves further – If we pay attention to it.   Why don’t you leave your hand on a hot stove?  Because if you do, it will destroy the hand.  The pain warns you of the inevitable and you remove the hand from the heat. Other types of pain are equally important indicators of what’s to come.   If you have pain, find out what is causing it and how to prevent the underlying cause from getting worse.  ...

Questions asked of a chiropractor for kids.   A former patient recently called and wanted to ask about chiropractic for her 9 month old baby.  She had a lot of really legitimate questions and I want to share some of them with you.  Asking questions is the best way to know if an office is right for you or a loved one.   –  Do you work with children and if not who can you send us to? I happen to work with children and have for 12 years.  I am also trained by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.  Any Chiropractor for kids should complete the entire certification course by the ICPA.  Portland, Maine and surrounding areas have very few fully trained pediatric chiropractors.   – What is the exam like? The majority of the exam is performed in the hands of the parent or lying on a blanket.  There is as much observing as there is palpating (touching) the baby.  The doctor examines the baby’s reflexes, symmetry in the body and head, the joints and movement of the child.   – What are you looking for? We are looking for subluxation of the spine and asymmetries within the neuromusculoskeletal system....

Guitar Shoulder Pain The Career Derailer   One of the most common complaints in the guitar players I see is shoulder pain.  Pain in the left shoulder from strap strain and in the right  shoulder because of arm position and strumming repetitively.   Shoulder pain should be taken very seriously in professional musicians and those who can’t live without playing.  This is true regardless of the instrument played.  Shoulder pain and the symptoms below may lead to “frozen shoulder” or “adhesive capsulitis”, an often debilitating and very disruptive condition for musicians.  Quick and simple, you don’t want frozen shoulder so look out for the symptoms below.  Depending on their presentation and your history, these symptoms may be “pre-frozen shoulder” warning signs. Symptoms to look out for are:   -Inflammation   -tension   -restricted motion   -pain in the shoulder and even arm   – New shoulder discomfort and weakness after playing   If you or a member of your band is experiencing any or all of these symptoms and your livelihood or happiness depend on playing, have yourself examined by a professional who deals in the health issues of musicians.  Dr. Lou knows guitar shoulder pain....

Chiropractic and Cancer   What does chiropractic have to do with cancer?   Chiropractic as a healing art is founded on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls all of the healing, regulation and control of the body.  Chiropractors look to the spine because the brain’s communication network, the nerves, come through the side of the spine (through joints) to regulate, heal and control the entire body.  The spine has over 100 joints that allow for flexibility and movement but may also become misaligned and put pressure on nerves.   Pressure on nerves causes disregulation or decreased ability for the brain to communicate healing, controlling and regulating messages to the part of the body at the end of a compromised nerve.   Chiropractors do not treat cancer.  Chiropractic does help optimize nerve communication and removes interference by removing pressure on nerves through realigning the spine.  Improved communication leads to better healing, regulation and control over all of the body’s functions, including your body’s ability to deal with cancer, handle treatments, regenerate cells, absorb nutrients from your diet and the like.   A great diet may not cure cancer but it is much better for a body with cancer...
